In a world where consumers are constantly distracted by text messages, e-mail alerts and app notifications, it can be difficult to concentrate. Narbis is a US start-up that aims to combat this with smart glasses designed to train the user’s brain to stay focused during tasks.
The glasses are fitted with three gold-tipped dry sensors that measure brain activity. When they detect that the user is losing focus, the electrochromic lenses in the glasses darken. When focus is regained, they lighten.
An accompanying smartphone app offers five training programmes to help shape behaviour. Focus promotes concentration; Performance boosts creativity; Calm helps users de-stress; Mood promises to improve their self-confidence; and Sleep encourages stress-free sleep cycles.
One of the main benefits of the glasses is that the training programmes can be completed in a user’s own home during everyday activities such as reading or watching television. Other brain-training programmes use specialist games or data-analysis tasks – the results of which don’t necessarily translate into real life, Narbis claims.
Narbis aims to raise $150,000 on crowdfunding platform Kickstarter to put the glasses into production. If the goal is reached, the first will ship in December 2015, with prices starting at $295.
